CQC takes further action against Shrewsbury and Telford hospital amid safety concerns
The Care Quality Commission has taken ‘further emergency action’ against a hospital trust already in special measures following safety concerns over maternity and emergency services.
The action has been taken following a recent inspection of two acute sites run by Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospitals Trust and a detailed report will shortly be issued on the findings.
The trust was placed into special measures in November and at that time it was already having to report weekly to the CQC on standards within the maternity and emergency care departments at the hospitals.
There is also an ongoing investigation into 250 baby deaths at the trust and on Thursday it received a £16,000 fine over failures surrounding the discovery of asbestos at one of its hospitals.
A spokesperson from the watchdog said “As a result we took further action with regard to emergency department care, including paediatrics.
“We are unable to give further details at this time but will report on our findings shortly.”
Dr Edwin Borman, medical director of the trust, said “We were not able to see all of our patients in 15 minutes, in line with national performance targets, and some of our patients left before we could start treatment.
“We have alerted our GP colleagues of any children who left our (emergency departments) before treatment, which was the main area of concern for the CQC.”
