Prescription Medications and Drug Driving
Driving under the influence of drugs, is a serious offence that can result in severe consequences. Many people are not aware that driving with some prescription medications in their system could land them in trouble with the law.
If you are caught driving over the legal limit you will face charges. However, when it comes to prescription medication, you may only drive legally if the medicine has not impaired your ability to drive.
It’s essential to know which prescription drugs could put you at risk of being over the legal limit. The list includes:
- Opiate and Opioid-based drugs (such as Codeine, Tramadol or Fentanyl), Oxazepam, and Temazepam.
- Amphetamine
- Clonazepam
- Diazepam
- Flunitrazepam
- Lorazepam
- Methadone
- Morphine
To drive legally with these drugs in your system, you must have been prescribed them and have followed the advice on how to take them given by a healthcare professional. Moreover, they must not be causing you to be unfit to drive, even if you are above the specified limits.
If you are caught drug driving, the consequences can be severe. For instance, if you kill someone while driving under the influence of drugs, you could be handed a life sentence in prison. Therefore, it is essential to seek legal help if you have been caught drug driving.
