Sue Preece’s Dedication to Supporting Those with Dementia
Introducing our Dementia Champion Sue Preece and Her Outstanding Work in Helping Others Navigate Dementia Care.
At Chadwick Lawrence, we’re privileged to have associates like Sue Preece, who has devoted over 30 years to helping individuals and families navigate all areas of care. Sue has been involved specifically in the often complex world of dementia care for nearly 14 years. In her role as a private client practitioner, Sue specialises in matters including Enduring and Lasting Powers of Attorney, Wills, and Court of Protection applications. But her work extends far beyond legal expertise—she chairs Chadwick Lawrence’s Dementia Committee and serves as a Dementia Friends Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, sharing invaluable insights with families impacted by dementia.
Sue’s dedication underscores the need for empathetic, knowledgeable legal guidance, especially for care homes where a deep understanding of dementia-related rights and responsibilities can make a world of difference. Her compassion has left a lasting impression on our team and community, showing the impact of patient advocacy and support.
Driving dementia awareness through community engagement
As Chadwick Lawrence’s Dementia Ambassador, Sue is a force for good both within and outside our offices. From organising coffee mornings and wellness walks to hosting knitting sessions, bake-offs, and gift drives, Sue’s initiatives raise funds and awareness for dementia research while creating a sense of unity and purpose within our team. Her dedication inspires others to rally around a cause that affects countless families, promoting care, understanding, and community spirit.
In addition to spearheading these initiatives, Sue’s role as a Dementia Friends Ambassador has had a lasting impact. She has been leading Dementia Friends Information Sessions for Chadwick Lawrence employees since 2016, and in recent years, our committee of volunteers has expanded its outreach efforts to educate colleagues and the wider community. Her sessions are accessible, interactive, and designed to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of dementia, helping attendees learn how they can support people living with this condition. To date, Sue has facilitated the creation of nearly 350 Dementia Friends across local businesses, schools, and community groups.
Building understanding and support within Chadwick Lawrence
With the support of our partners, Sue and the dementia committee work tirelessly to build a culture of empathy, knowledge, and support for those living with dementia and their families. Reflecting on her own journey, Sue shares, “Having cared for a loved one with dementia, I know how essential it is to have an understanding community around you. My wish is that no one faces this alone. Our committee’s work aims to make a positive impact not just within our firm but across West Yorkshire, raising both awareness and funds for much-needed research and services.”
Events and initiatives
Throughout the year, our dementia committee organises various events in support of Dementia Action Week, Carers Week, and other community efforts. For example, this May, we’ll be hosting a firm-wide bake-off to support Dementia Action Week, and in June, we’ll participate in Carers Week with additional fundraisers. Our annual Christmas gift drive is a major project, where we donate handmade and collected gifts to local dementia care homes, bringing a little joy to residents and fostering community connections.
Supporting care homes with dementia knowledge
Our team at Chadwick Lawrence also supports care homes through legal guidance tailored to the needs of dementia patients. By assisting with Court of Protection applications, mental capacity assessments, and powers of attorney, we aim to empower care providers with the tools needed to deliver compassionate, lawful care.
We encourage care homes to partner with firms like Chadwick Lawrence, that are knowledgeable in elder care to ensure residents’ needs are met with dignity and respect. For those seeking further resources, The Law Society and Alzheimer’s Society offer valuable directories to locate specialist solicitors.
Making a difference together
Through ongoing awareness, education, and community efforts, we strive to create a supportive environment where those affected by dementia can find understanding and aid. We invite you to join us in raising awareness and breaking down the stigma around dementia, offering support and guidance to families navigating this journey.
