Revolutionary new ‘magic bullet’ treatment for prostate cancer
A revolutionary new treatment that destroys prostate cancer cells has cured terminally ill patients, in some cases given just weeks to live.
A Cypriot study found that six out of ten patients with advanced disease are still in remission now one year after receiving the therapy.
The treatment involves the use of a molecule which attaches to the tumour cells and then releases energy that destroys the cancer.
Researchers have now said that they believe the treatment may potentially benefit patients with other forms of cancer, including kidney, thyroid and brain.
The new ‘magic bullet’ treatment works by using chemically-engineered molecules, which are known as prostate specific membrane antigens. They act as a ‘trojan horse’, tricking their way inside cancer cells.
Once inside the cells, the molecule releases nuclear energy, which kills the tumours.
Lead author of the study, Professor Giovanni Paganelli of the European Institute of Oncology, said “This is a great achievement and the results are amazing.
“This is true, targeted medicine, non-toxic and effective.
“If it works in late-stage disease, it is more likely to work better at an earlier stage and this is the direction we now want to take.”
The results of the study were presented at the International Conference of Clinical Oncology in Cyprus on Wednesday.
