When Should You Review Your Will?
When you write your Will, you often want to finalise the document, without dwelling on the matter further. You’ll then put it away for safekeeping, without thinking too much about its contents for many years. But it is certainly worth reviewing it.
People’s circumstances change over time, and you need to be certain that your Will still reflects your wishes. Are the beneficiaries named in it still the people you still wish to inherit your estate? Are there any people or gifts you would like to add or remove? These are questions worth asking.
There are many life changes that can happen that mean you need to review your Will. The most common being getting married or divorced, entering, or dissolving a civil partnership, having children or grandchildren or a change in your financial circumstances. Should any of these situations occur, then you should speak to a professional about the impact this could have on your Will.
Our advice at Chadwick Lawrence is to review your Will every five years. This does not necessarily mean making a new Will, but simply ensuring that the contents are still relevant. We are happy to talk through your Will with you for your peace of mind.
Reviewing your Will with a professional also means that we can discuss any changes in law that may affect you, for example changes to the inheritance tax rules.
