Cancer warning of blood in urine to appear in men’s toilets
Male cancer warnings are to appear on urinal mats in public toilets as part of a drive by NHS England to increase early detection of the disease.
The mats, which are to be installed in thousands of toilets in pubs, restaurants, hotels, football grounds and some workplaces, will carry a message urging men to seek help if they notice blood in their urine, which could be a symptom of kidney, prostate or bladder cancer.
The campaign follows recent research by NHS England which revealed that nearly half of men did not know blood appearing in urine was a symptom of cancer. The survey also found that over a third of men would wait for a recurrence of the symptom prior to visiting a GP.
NHS chiefs believe the scheme will take “vital cancer awareness messaging” into locations where symptoms such as blood in urine may first be noticed.
Professor Peter Johnson, National Clinical Director for Cancer at NHS England, said the symptom “shouldn’t be ignored” and urged anyone experiencing it to “get checked out early”, as it could be life-saving.
