DIY kits could see million more cervical-cancer tests
Researchers estimate that more than one million additional women could have life-saving cervical-cancer checks if the NHS adopted DIY testing.
The team at King’s College London said the results of its self-testing trial were “fantastic” and “gave power to women”.
The kits are similar to a Covid swab but longer and are posted to a lab for analysis.
The NHS have called the findings extremely positive and is assessing whether to roll out the scheme to the public.
Dr Anita Lim from King’s College London, said “Self-sampling has been hailed as a game-changer for cervical screening – and we now have evidence in a UK population to show that it really is.”
Self-testing is already offered in the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Australia.
Deborah Tomalin, NHS England’s screening and vaccination director, called the trial results “extremely promising”.
She added “The NHS will now be working with the UK National Screening Committee to consider the feasibility of rolling this out more widely across England.”
