Employment Rights Bill – Leave it Out!

Whilst a raft of employment law changes have recently been proposed, many longer-term ideas have not made it into the Employment Rights Bill. We examine what could be introduced further down the line, commenting on the right to switch off, unpaid internships, minimum wage age bands, pay gap reporting and the parental leave system, among other elements.

In the News

Police Dismissals up by Almost 50% from 2023

In the wake of increased concern about the culture of policing in the UK, the College of Policing has released statistics that show that the number of police officers sacked and barred from returning to work has increased by almost 50% from 2023 to 2024.

The statistics come at a time when the police force is already under heavy scrutiny for the conduct of its officers, following the murder of Sarah Everard by PC Wayne Couzens in 2021, the jailing of former Met Police sergeant David Carrick for a series of rapes over twenty years and the emergence of the fact that several UK police officers were members of a discriminatory WhatsApp group. These instances have resulted in the Met and other police forces commissioning independent reviews of their workplace culture, which have uncovered examples of institutionalised misogyny, racism and homophobia.

The figures show that between March 2023 and 2024, 593 police officers were sacked from the force. The Police Barred list lists a total of 912 reasons for why officers were sacked, the most common reason being dishonesty (125 cases).  The list showed that 74 cases featured sexual offences or misconduct, 71 featured discrimination, 66 featured unlawful access to or disclosure of information, 33 featured officers abusing their position for a sexual purpose, 18 featured officers partaking in a discriminatory WhatsApp group and another 18 featured officers possessing indecent images of children.

Whilst the College have described the figures as being “hugely disappointing”, they have also pointed to the fact that the figures show that they have put in place robust procedures to identify and tackle with wrongdoing.

They have also stressed that the number of dismissals represents just 0.35% of the workforce, and that they are committed to continuing to attract the right people into the force, and barring those who do not meet these standards from having any future in the police.
